Marietta is a small city in the Cobb County in Georgia. This is an important city in the county as it has the county seat. As of 2008 Marietta has a population of around 67,000 people. Marietta is included in two important statistical areas of Georgia, namely the Atlanta–Sandy Springs–Marietta and partially in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Gainesville, Georgia-Alabama area. History of Marietta beings from 1834, when it was incorporated as a village. However, it soon it became a city in 1852. Since then it has had an important role to play in the history of United States. During the 1850s there were multiple fires that did a lot of damage to the city. Mariette figures prominently in the American Civil War of 1861. The Andrew Raiders stole the engine of the General train during that time to end the Civil War quickly. One of the main drivers of the local economy in Mariette today is the defense industry. The Dobbins Air Reserve Base is located to the south of Marietta. The city also has a large manufacturing plant of Lockheed-Martin. On the cultural front, the most popular attraction here is the Theatre in the Square in downtown Marietta. Besides these, the Strand Theatre and Marietta Museum of History are also well known.
